Opposition forces in Syria recently handed over American citizen Travis Timmerman to US forces, who subsequently flew him to Jordan, according to two US officials on Friday. The transfer involved US military personnel from Operation Inherent Resolve, the US military's campaign against ISIS, as confirmed by a third official.
The handover occurred at Al-Tanf, a US garrison in Syria known for anti-ISIS operations. Travis Timmerman, who was detained in a Syrian prison near Damascus, was released on December 9 after the fall of the Assad regime. The second official mentioned that CENTCOM is collaborating with the Department of State to ensure Timmerman's safe return.
During his detainment, Timmerman revealed that he had entered Syria without permission by crossing the border from Lebanon. He stated that his purpose for traveling to Syria was spiritual in nature.
Expressing their relief, Timmerman's mother and stepfather shared their anxiety over not hearing from him for seven months. The family had feared the worst until news of his release emerged.
