American tourist on Edinburgh trip 'shaken' after man tries to get into Airbnb

An American tourist shared how she was left 'shaken' on a trip to Edinburgh after a man had tried to gain access to her Airbnb.

Kelsey Hansen had taken to social media app TikTok after being asked how safe she felt on her one-month-long trip to the capital earlier this year.

In an emotional video, Kelsey said she felt overall that Edinburgh was a very safe place to travel to solo, and recommended the city to others around the world.

However, the tourist added that there was "one thing" that she had to mention, and explained that it had made her want to purchase a door handle alarm for any future travelling.

While in her Abbeyhill Airbnb alone, Kelsey said she had heard a knock at the door in her tenement flat, and had gone to the door to ask who it was.

Careful not to open the door to the stranger, she added that the man would not explain his reasoning for trying to get into the flat.

She said: "I felt very safe it was very fun and an experience I will never forget.

"However there was one thing that happened that I wanted to talk about and what I would maybe do next time and bring with me to to make me feel safer in general.

"My apartment was on the very top of the building, no way out and reason for anyone else to be there. On this night I was by myself getting ready to go meet up with a friend and there was a knock on my door.

"There was no peephole so I yelled through the door 'who is it.' I didn't open the door or even entertain that idea but this man didn't tell me what he was there for or his name and I asked him repeatedly.

"All he wanted was for me to open my door, which I did not do.

"After around three minutes of this back and forth of me asking why he was there, he left and sounded really angry and was stomping down the stairs. It left me a little shaken so I called the non emergency hotline to report it just incase he was doing it to other people, and I stayed in a hotel for two nights."
