An American who proclaimed herself "Wallish" left a TikTok star bemused — then failed to recognise a Welsh flag. A video showing influencer Tom Pratt quiz the girl about Wales has gone viral on the social media platform.
London-based Tom, who often tests people's knowledge about countries and flags, had introduced himself to the girls by saying he is from the UK. One of them responded: "Oh my God, I'm Wallish." Tom queried this and the girl said she meant: "Waleish something Waleish".
Tom, 21, then held up a picture of the Welsh flag and asked the girls: "What flag do you think this is then?" One girl said: "I know it" before suggesting Austria, while her friend said: "War flag?"
The girls asked for a hint and Tom said it begins with a "W". One girl then offered: "Wyoming?" and her friend guessed: "Wellington?" Tom continued to look puzzled by their patchy geographical knowledge. He posted a video of their conversation on his TikTok page "tomprattx" and it has since had 442,600 likes, North Wales Live reports.
Tom told North Wales Live: "When she said she was Welsh, or as she said it 'Wallish', and didn’t know her own flag, it came as a surprise to me, especially when most people around the world should know the flag with it being in the World Cup etc, so I found it very funny. I found it even more funny when she said the Wales flag was Austria or New Zealand and, when I tried to help her out by saying it began with W, she said Wyoming and Wellington, which aren’t even countries.
"She was very confident when she said she was Wallish, which I think made the video 10 times funnier. A lot of Americans I have met tell me they only learn geography up to sixth grade, which is why a lot won’t have a clue what some of the easiest flags are. I'd say the UK is a lot better-educated with geography."
