Tragedy struck in Haiti as two American missionaries and another individual fell victim to gang violence in the capital city. The married couple, Natalie and Davie Lloyd, were working as missionaries when they were ambushed and killed by a gang. The situation in Haiti has been dire since March, with rival gangs overthrowing the government in Port-au-Prince and spreading terror across the nation.
The gang violence has escalated to the point where gangs now control 80% of the capital city. The Lloyd's were attacked by a gang of three trucks full of individuals who tied up Davie, beat him, and looted their belongings before fleeing the scene. The U.S. State Department expressed condolences to the family and offered consular assistance during this difficult time.
Efforts to stabilize Haiti are ongoing, with Haitian police regaining control of critical infrastructure such as the airport. Commercial flights have resumed, and American carriers are expected to resume operations soon. President Biden and Kenyan President Ruta reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Haiti during a state dinner at the White House, pledging financial aid to the tune of $300 million for MSS Mission and an additional $60 million for equipment assistance.
Despite the interim president in place, Haiti continues to grapple with widespread violence, infrastructure challenges, and a collapsing health system. The situation remains precarious, with water, electricity, and communication outages adding to the country's woes.
