American man discovered ‘exposed and dehydrated’ after disappearing in west Cork

A young American man was found "exposed and dehydrated" after going missing in rugged west Cork terrain.

Emergency services assembled in Adrigole at around 3pm on Sunday to begin a search-and-rescue operation after the man was reported missing. It's understood he was working for a farmer in the Trafask area and hadn't been seen since the night before.

Coast guard units split into several groups, calling in the Rescue 115 helicopter from the Shannon Coast Guard to assist. The operation went on for more than an hour and a half before a sighting, Cork Beo reports.

A neighbour spoke to Gardaí, saying that they may have seen the young man the night before and told them approximate whereabouts.

He was then discovered in a patch of rough terrain, dehydrated and exposed.

He was brought via stretcher to the main road where medical personnel were waiting.

National Ambulance Service staff conducted checks at the scene before deciding to transport the young man to hospital for further testing.

A spokesperson for the Castletownbere Coast Guard said: "After arriving at the scene, the CG team split into several search parties and started combing through the land while the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115 carried out searches from the air. Some 1.5 hours in, the Gardaí at the scene received information of a possible sighting by a neighbour.

"The casualty was located soon afterwards on rough terrain about a mile away. He was suffering from exposure and dehydration but was otherwise in good health.

"After the initial assessment, the CG crew stretchered him back on the road, and he was taken to hospital for further treatment in cooperation between the National Ambulance Service (NAS) personnel from Castletownbere and the air ambulance. Tonight's incident was a great example of teamwork between the different agencies, and we are very happy with this good outcome for the casualty."
