Two experienced pilots were at the helm of American Airlines Flight 5342, according to the company's CEO, Robert Isom. Isom highlighted the extensive experience of the captain, who had nearly six years with PSA Airlines, and the first officer, who had almost two years of experience. PSA Airlines, a regional airline fully owned and operated by American Airlines, was responsible for operating Flight 5342.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized that the classification of the flight as a training mission did not necessarily indicate a lack of experience on the part of the personnel aboard the Blackhawk helicopter. Duffy clarified that training missions in the DC area are crucial for pilots to accumulate hours and gain valuable experience. He cautioned against assuming the level of experience based solely on the designation of the mission.
