AMD Radeon RX 7000 GPU: Everything we know so far about the full series of GPUs

The new AMD Radeon RX 7000 series was first revealed at the AMD event on November 4, 2022, with the 7900 leading the way.

At the moment, the only confirmed cards from the 7000 line are the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24 GB and the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT 20 GB, which are the high-end cards in the series. We already know that they will retail for $999 and $899 respectively and will be releasing on December 13, 2022.

As for other cards in the line, we have no official information yet, but we can already form expectations surrounding them based on the 7900 series we have seen already.

In terms of what we can expect, we know the next generation of GPUs utilizes its RDNA 3 technology. That means we can expect higher levels of performance, efficiency, and functionality compared to the older RX 6000 series.

The 7900 series GPUs are built around AMD's 7nm RDNA 2 microarchitecture, while the impending AMD Radeon RX 6000 GPUs use a 5nm process. We're hoping the rest of the line will also take advantage of this new technology.

AMD Radeon RX 7000 release date

At the moment we know that the 7900 series will be released on December 13, 2022. As of yet, AMD has not confirmed any pre-orders on these cards, however, there may be preorders from other retailers so be sure to keep an eye out.

As for other cards in the line, now that the ball is rolling we're sure they will release slowly over the start of the next year. It's likely they will go from the higher tier to the lower tier, as is the usual way with graphics cards being released. This means if you're waiting for the budget edition then you may be waiting a while.

How much will the AMD Radeon RX 7000 GPUs cost?

We were presently surprised to see that the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX 24 GB will retail for $999 USD, which roughly translates to £895.30 / AU$1587.71 when converted.

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT 20 GB will retail for $899 USD, roughly translating to £805.68 / AU$1428.78. AMD has yet to confirm the cost of the cards in other regions, so these are just rough estimates.

Given that these prices were really low compared to Nvidia's new GPUs, we're excited to see the prices for the rest of the cards in the series. Although they won't contain as much power as the 7900, they will still be more powerful than the previous generation, making them a perfect option for those who are looking are looking to game on a budget and aren't phased by triple-A titles.

AMD Radeon RX 7000 GPUs performance

AMD has claimed that the 7900 cards will be 'The Most Advanced Graphics for Gamers and Creators' and we hope that they will live up to the hype. This also sets up extremely high expectations for the rest of the series.

We're seeing AMD RDNA 3 Chiplet-design architecture and Dual Media Engine with AV1 encode/decode in both 7900 series cards and we're assuming this new and innovative technology will be present across the entire line of cards.

RDNA 3 technology allows for new AI accelerators and 2nd generation Raytracing Accelerators meaning an increase in overall performance and much brighter, realistic visuals based on light rays within your game. RDNA 2 technology, which was used in the previous 6000 series, was so successful that it was also used in the Xbox Series X|S, the PlayStation 5, and the SteamDeck.

You'll also find Dual Media Engine with AV1, which means you get full AV1 encode/decode support. This will function with up to 8K ultra-high definition resolutions. This essentially means the cards are made for and catered to streamers as you'll get lower bitrates when streaming the same high-quality videos when compared to other cards.

As for the specifics, we have a full rundown of the 7900 specifications in our guide so we won't repeat ourselves. However, they seem to present power close to that of the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 from Nvidia at a much lower price. This makes us very hopeful for the rest of the line too.
