Shots have been fired at Nvidia by AMD's SVP and GM, Scott Herkelmam, during the live stream unveiling its latest line of graphics card.
Herkelmam announced that when upgrading your graphics card to the new 7000 series – comprised of the RX 7900 XTX 24 GB, and RX 7900 XT 20GB - you won't need a new power supply. Instead, it'll be as simple as taking out your old card and putting your new one in.
This was a backhanded nod toward the fact that many PC gamers have had to rebuild their entire machines when upgrading to the new Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics card. This was because of the sheer size of the card, that makes it unable to fit into most mid-tower PC cases – it's just too wide. People have also had to upgrade their power supply's to support the massive 450w power consumption of the card.
AMD drove home the point several times, boasting that its new RX 7900 series GPU is 'easy to upgrade'. And it's not wrong to lean on this factor as a selling point. Given the issues surrounding the accommodation of Nvidia's massive cards, like bent cables – or in extreme cases, melting cables – it could turn the heads of people looking to upgrade.
