Ambulance workers to strike again in two walkouts over pay

Ambulance workers will stage two further strikes in a dispute over pay and staffing, the union has announced.

Unison says the industrial action will take place on January 11 and 23. Members of the GMB union at nine ambulance trusts are also ready to strike on December 28.

Thousands of ambulance workers have been walking out across England and Wales with some patients being told to make their own way to A&E. Staff are taking to the picket lines in their thousands in their desperation to keep the nation's ailing health service alive, MirrorOnline reports.

Unison leaders say the action is a direct result of the government's refusal to negotiate over pay. Life-threatening calls to 999, as well as the most serious emergency calls, will still be responded to, they say.

Services in London, Yorkshire, the North West, North East and South West will take action over pay and staffing. BBC's Hugh Pym reported the strikes would last 24 hours, compared to the 12 hour strikes this week.
