Ambitious League Two club target former Nottingham Forest star on free transfer

Former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Jordan Smith has been linked with a move to Stockport County.

The 28-year-old is a free agent after being released by Forest at the end of his contract.

He began the season as Forest's third choice keeper before going on loan to Huddersfield Town in January, however, he did not play a single minute for the team the Reds beat in the the 2022 Championship play-off final.

Smith last played competitively in March 2021, in a 2-0 defeat to Norwich City. He was Forest's first choice keeper from February 2017 to January 2018, playing 47 times in that run.

The academy product built a reputation as a good shot stopper and etched his name into club history with his incredible stop against Ipswich when he touched the ball onto the bar in the final day win as Forest avoided relegation to League One.

Regarded as an excellent professional, Smith is likely to want to be a first choice again at this stage of his career.

Journalist Alan Nixon says Stockport are keen on Smith after they narrowly missed out on promotion from League Two as they lost in the play-off final to Carlisle United.

They are now looking to go one better next season and have been well backed in the transfer market in the last few years.

Smith was one of six players released by Forest with Jesse Lingard, Jack Colback, Cafu, Andre Ayew and Lyle Talyor also departing at the end of their deals.
