Amber weather warning issued with 'life-threatening floods' expected

THE MET Office has now issued an amber weather warning for parts of Scotland with heavy rainfall and strong winds expected to hit.

An amber warning for rain will now come into force from Thursday at 6am until 6pm on Friday for much of the east of Scotland.

According to the Met Office, an amber warning can mean:

  • Dangerous driving conditions because of spray and flooded roads
  • Road closures and bus and train service delays and cancellations likely
  • Extensive flooding to homes and businesses is possible, which could lead to collapsed or damaged buildings or structures
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life
  • There is a chance that communities in flooded areas could be completely cut off, perhaps for several days
  • Power and other essential services, such as gas, water or mobile phone service, may be lost

Traffic Scotland also provided an updated on its social media encouraging everyone to take care.

It said there is the possibility of travel delays as well as rail and road closures and warned people not to travel unless it was “absolutely essential”.

The Met Office has warned of a period of “very wet weather” with a separate yellow warning for rain in force from Thursday at 6am until Saturday at 6am.

It has also issued a yellow warning for wind for the northern half of Scotland which will begin on Thursday at 3am and last until Friday at midday.
