Amazon warning as retailer to close popular online book shop

Amazon is set to permanently close its UK based online book shop - Book Depository - later this month.

Founded in Gloucester, the online book shop, acquired by Amazon in 2011, will close its virtual doors after 12 years of service within the online retailer and almost two decades in business overall. The US technology giant shared the news this week, with customers across the world saddened by the closure.

In a message on its website, Book Depository said to customers: "We are sorry to let you know that Book Depository will be closing on 26 April 2023. You can still place orders until midday on 26 April and we will continue to deliver your purchases and provide support for any order issues until 23 June.

"From all of us at Book Depository we want to say thank you.

"Delivering your favourite reads to you since 2007 has been a pleasure."

The news follows huge jobs cuts across the company, with the Gourock distribution centre amongst closures resulting in 300 jobs losses.

The business shake up has also seen Amazon announce it will no longer sell magazines and newspaper subscriptions on its e-book device Kindle.

Chief Executive Andy Jassy said in an earlier blog that just over 18,000 roles would be cut across the company, including jobs in book selling operations.

Mr Jassy explained the move as "the hard decision to eliminate a number of positions across our Devices and Books businesses".
