Amazon shoppers urged to check small-print as people are hit with €38 charge

Amazon users are being warned by savvy shoppers to read the small print before ordering a product - particularly those that seem like major bargains.

Some are reporting being ripped off on postage charges after not checking the fee before putting the order through.

One person took to the internet to say they were horrified after they went to purchase a bar of Cadbury’s chocolate, which had been reduced from €4.14 to 49c.

Heather Teece told the Extreme Couponing and Bargains Facebook group that she was delighted to have found the deal but then she checked the small print and was shocked to find the price of postage was a whopping €37.93.

Postage for one bar was free, but when Heather added another bar to meet the minimum order requirement, and the postage charge changed. Now she's urging everyone to be careful when ordering from Amazon.

Despite the fact that these prices are featured on the legitimate Amazon marketplace, the online retailer is not responsible for the prices its third-party sellers charge - but does have systems in place to try and prevent this from happening.

Heather wrote: "Got really excited when I saw the price of the big bars of Dairy Milk on Amazon . . . It was minimum 2 buy . . . Look what shipping jumped to."

After seeing the post, shoppers rushed to share their own stories, and Jennie Halligan wrote: "I got caught out by this too but with some fabric softener.

“It said Prime delivery but afterward it was €59 delivery. I’ve sent it back for a refund and complained but it cost me €15.40 to send it back."

Rebecca Henry wrote: "There have been loads of 48c items this week with €37.93 postage."

Laura Overton replied: "I had this with some deodorant, 48c instead of €4.74 but you needed to buy two. Then when you went to check out postage jumped to €35.55."

Becky Smith said: "They did this with body spray I was looking for.. On my account, it was showing 48c a tin (spend so much more to get the free delivery).

“Tried it on Prime, was available on Prime and stated free delivery until my dad went to check out and they asked for €42.70 postage. Luckily he noticed before purchasing so obviously we never bothered.."

Lily-Rose Jenkins said: "How can they get away with that?? Imagine if you didn't notice the shipping cost,” and Catherine O'Leary said: "They’ve been doing this with so many items recently!"

Amazon responded to the issue and said: "We work hard every day to provide customers with low prices, vast selection, and fast delivery.

"Sellers set their own product prices in our store and we have policies to help ensure sellers are pricing their products competitively, including shipping costs. We actively monitor our store and remove offers that violate our policies."
