Amazon shoppers praise £21 gadget that keeps energy bills as low as possible

A handy gadget is being praised by shoppers for helping to reduce their energy bills. The item has just been discounted in Amazon's Black Friday sale and is described as a "spot on bit of kit."

Amazon officially launched their Black Friday sale on November 18, a whole week before the day itself which takes place on November 25 this year. The biggest event in the shopping calendar means consumers will see thousands of products reduced online and in stores to kick start the Christmas shopping season.

With inflation at its highest ever recorded and energy prices showing no signs of decreasing, many shoppers may be looking at gadgets and items that can help save money, while keeping their house warm and energy spending to a minimum. One particular gadget is being hailed as doing just that.

The Power Meter plug-in Energy Monitor was originally priced at £35.98 but shoppers can currently get it for £21.59 in Amazon's Black Friday sale if they are a Prime member, or there's a two pack for £42.99 instead of £45.99. Those who are not signed up to Amazon Prime can get a free 30 day trial here.

The meter can measure and display voltage, current, energy, frequency, power factor, maximum current and power, time days cost and total kWh of products.

It's a good tool to have in and around the house to find out which appliance is using the most energy and when. Designed to help users lower their power consumption and save money, the meter also comes with a two-year warranty.

Jessie Parker tested the meter in her home which she said was easy to use, but was shocked to find out what the biggest energy consumer was, read more of her review here. Other shoppers have also commented on how useful the energy meter is, with some even changing their lifestyle habits because of it.

One Amazon reviewer said the meter is "simple to use and fascinating to get to grips with." He said: "It's a spot on bit of kit.

"Simple to use and fascinating to get to grips with power usage of items especially over a times e.g. a fridge where it shows that power is only drawn periodically and it is quite low usage.

"Like the fact that you can input electricity unit cost so you see real time expenditure without resorting to a calculator or spreadsheet. Backlight is a real boon for plugs in darker out of the way places."

The devices measures current (A), watts (W), cumulative electrical quantity (KWh), and voltage (V). Users can plug the device straight into the wall and then plug the appliance they want to test into that.

The screen will light up and users can switch to different display modes by clicking the function button. Once the appliance is up and running, it's as simple as reading the number on the display and noting it down.

Another shopper said the device has helped save money, they said: "In this modern day of rising bills, how do you find the worst power draw?

"These help a lot and helped me identify the massive difference in watts between two ostensibly identical appliances (138W on one, 32W on another of the same model). Not only does that save us money, it identified one unit needed servicing before anything obvious was wrong."

The meter has also helped householders with ways to reduce usages, Matthew said: "Can't fault this in any way. Does the job.

"I have gone around the whole house working out what is using all the power, and when I compared the total to my meter readings, it matches quite well, with space for some of the things I can't measure like the oven, extractor fan, and boiler. Gave me some ideas for how to reduce usage."

The meter can also read if plug sockets are overloaded in the house as well as giving a detailed run down of energy usage overall. The Amazon Prime price is currently £21.59 but if you're not part of Prime you can still get it for less than the original price of £35.98 down to £26.99.
