Amazon Prime Video’s TV series adaptation of the Fallout game series is due on April 12, 2024.
Amazon announced the release date on October 23, known as Fallout Day, which marks the beginning of the nuclear war that ended modern civilisation in the Fallout universe.
The Fallout TV series will not be a direct adaptation of the storyline of any of the Fallout games, but an original story based in the vibrantly grim wasteland world of the series.
Fallout TV show details
Most of the show's key actors have already been revealed. Fallout will star Walton Goggins, Ella Purnell, Kyle MacLachlan and Johnny Pemberton, although the only star IMDb lists as featuring in all eight of the first season’s episodes is Moises Arias.
Arias has previously starred in The King of Staten Island and Ender’s Game.
The first three episodes of Fallout TV show are directed by Jonathan Nolan, brother of Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan.
He appeared in a Beyond the Game teaser trailer for the show, published in October 2022. Nolan is an executive producer for the TV series, alongside Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 game director Todd Howard.
“One of the people I’ve always wanted to do it was Jonathan Nolan. I’ve loved the movies he’s written and worked on with his brother, and the TV shows with Lisa Joy,” said Howard in the teaser.
Nolan created the Westworld TV series, and co-wrote numerous Christopher Nolan films including The Dark Knight, Interstellar and The Prestige. However, Nolan himself isn’t listed as a writer on the Fallout TV show.
Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner are lead writers and show runners, and their credits could be said to represent two of the sides of the Fallout style: action and humour.
Robertson-Dworet co-wrote Captain Marvel and Tomb Raider, while Wagner’s career is knee-deep in comedy, previous credits including Silicon Valley, Portlandia and the US version of The Office.
The show reportedly finished filming in March, narrowly avoiding the Writer’s Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA Hollywood strikes, which began in May and July respectively.
Amazon showed a trailer for the series behind closed doors at Gamescom, a video game show in August.
IGN wrote that the show is looking flashy and expensive, and features plenty of Fallout series motifs, such as the armour-clad Brotherhood of Steel faction.
“While we only had a very small look at the show, it’s clear that the production values are high, with the visual effects looking impressive,” said IGN.
If there are no further days, Fallout will arrive on Prime Video a little under four years after it was originally announced in July 2020.
