UK shoppers spent £581 million online on the first day of Amazon Prime Day, but the total was only up by 1.3% on last year despite sky-high inflation, as growth stalls for the ecommerce giant’s signature event.
The date was still the biggest day for UK online shopping in 2023, according to Adobe Digital Insights.
The £581 million included £89.5 million spent using buy-now-pay-later services, a jump of 20% on last year to make up one in every eight orders.
Vivek Pandya, Adobe Digital Insights Lead Analys, said: “Prime Day has so far become the biggest online shopping day in the UK for 2023, with consumers taking advantage of bigger discounts and extra value, and revealing a 1.3% growth compared to 2022.
The amount spent in the UK was well below the US, where $6.4 billion was spent, up 6% from last year.
“Prime Day has become of one the biggest e-commerce moments of the year, as consumers latch onto major discounts from a number of different retailers,” Pandya said.
“The record spending so far shows us that consumers are tapping into their inner bargain hunters, stocking up on specific categories such as electronics and apparel while the discounts remain steep.”
Amazon shares are up 2.2% since the start of Amazon Prime Day this year, adding about $30billion to the ecommerce firm’s market cap.
