Amazon has launched a new free streaming service to sit as an alternative to its paid-for - and much better known - Prime Video platform. Amazon Freevee went live on April 27.
The little-known service is supported by adverts, but the commerce giant says it plans to increase the new platform's exclsuive original line-up by 70% this year, reports BirminghamLive.
The service was originally launched as IMDb TV in the UK last year. It's now been rebranded and will see a vast increase in its offering, as well as being more closely aligned with the Amazon brand.
IMDb, the online film and TV database most people visit to check movie reviews, is owned by Amazon. Whilst Amazon’s ad-free streaming service Amazon Prime Video offers a large range of new releases and original shows, Freevee includes older TV shows and classic films, as well as some originals.
Freevee can be accessed through the Prime Video app or via a web browser. Users will need an Amazon account to use the service but obviously don't need a paid-for Amazon Prime subscription. The channel can be watched on Fire TV devices, tablets and smartphones.
The streaming service has thousands of titles available to view, with more releases scheduled this month. Currently, Amazon Freevee has nearly 3,000 titles available to stream including classic films La Dolce Vita and Mean Streets.
All seasons of Dawson’s Creek, 2 Broke Girls, Skins, Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares and It’s A Wonderful Life film are a few of the titles included in the streaming service. The full list can be found here.
The streaming service also has a few original titles in development. These include Post Malone: Runaway, Beyond Black Beauty and America’s Test Kitchen: The Next Generation.
