Jeff Bezos has announced he will give away the majority of his £110 billion fortune during his lifetime.
On Monday, the Amazon founder revealed his intentions for the first time - having previously been criticised for not signing up to a campaign launched by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates for the mega rich to give more to charity.
Asked by a reporter whether he planned to give most of his fortune to good causes, he said: “Yeah, I do,” adding he and partner Lauren Sánchez were "building the capacity to be able to give away money".
Mr Bezos, who is the second richest person in the world behind Elon Musk, said his wealth would be spent to aid causes that tackle climate change and unify humanity.
His announcement comes on the heels of his announcement at the Cop27 summit that his Bezos Earth Fund will spend $10 billion, $1 billion more than previously announced, to help protect carbon reserves and biodiversity.
The 58-year-old has been more committed to various projects since stepping down as chief executive of Amazon but he does continue to own 10 per cent of the online marketplace.
He also owns the Washington Post news outlet and space tourism venture Blue Origin.
One other project is the courage and civility award, which gives people the chance to donate vast sums to causes of their choice.
Last week, he gave £85 million to country music star Dolly Parton to pass onto charities close to her heart as part of the awards.
