'Amazing' teen who 'could light up any room' praised after tragic drowning at lake

A young footballer who sadly drowned has been remembered by his coach as an "amazing" teenager.

Lewis Sekyireh, 14, was named locally as the boy who got into difficulty while swimming in North Met Lake in Cheshunt on Monday.

An urgent search was launched as police, fire crews and paramedics scrambled to the area just before 5pm.

Officers confirmed that a body was found approximately six hours later.

Formal identification is yet to take place, however, the boy’s next of kin have been informed.

Tezel Dogullari, Lewis’ football coach at Limitless Football Academy, said his parents are devastated as they lost their only son.

He told Evening Standard : “Lewis was such a well-mannered young man with his unforgettable energy and charisma.

“Lewis had a lot of potential in football but his real love was music, he was a young talented rapper and an incredible drummer where he played at church.

“He had respect for his elders at the same time he was an amazing teenager that could light up any room with his smile. He was a real joy to be around.

“Lewis will live in our hearts for all the joy he brought into our lives, as for the pain we’re all experiencing right now is unexplainable.”

Mr Dogullari started a GoFundMe in hopes of helping the family with funeral costs.

A Herts Police spokesperson said yesterday: "Emergency Services carried out searches of the area, including the use of the police helicopter and specialist police divers.

"At just before 11pm last night a body was recovered.

"Formal identification is yet to take place, however, the boy’s next of kin have been informed."

The Royal Life Saving Society has issued a warning about the dangers of open water swimming (North News & Pictures Ltd northnews.co.uk)

The youngster is one of at least seven teenage boys thought to have drowned during the hot weather this summer.

Several adults have also tragically lost their lives while swimming during heatwaves.

The recent tragedies have sparked an urgent warning from the Royal Life Saving Society about the dangers of open water swimming.

Charity director Lee Heard said: "Every year during the summer we see a sharp rise in the number of accidental drownings in the UK as many people look to cool off on hot summer days like we are experiencing currently.

"I deeply regret to say we have already seen a number of drownings already in the past few weeks as the temperatures have soared.

“It is vital to ensure that everyone has an understanding of water safety and makes it their responsibility to educate their family and friends on how water can be enjoyed safely to prevent such tragedies".
