'Amazing' sister dies, man stranded at Leeds Festival and 'party flats' problem

These are the ECHO morning headlines on Tuesday, August 30.

'Amazing' sister, 16, dies after inhaling laughing gas at house party

An "amazing" 16-year-old has died after inhaling laughing gas at a house party.

Kayleigh Burns, who is originally from Halewood, collapsed at a house party in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, moments after being recorded taking laughing gas. Her sister, Clare Baker, 31, said she first received a message from one of Kayleigh's friends on the night of June 4, to say she was taken to hospital by ambulance.

Clare then rang around a number of hospitals in the area trying to find out if her little sister was okay. Merseyside Police came to her home later the same day to tell her Kayleigh, who was just weeks away from turning 17, had died.

Clare, from North Liverpool, said: "My sister was only 16, almost 17, and she was the most amazing little girl ever. The bond that we had, I can't even describe.

"Kayleigh grew up and had a good childhood and she was in a loving family. As she grew older she got mixed up with the wrong sort of people.

"She was interested in make-up and fashion and wanted to travel the world. She wanted to be an air hostess or work on the cruises and her life was taken away from her."

Man stranded at Leeds Festival until 5am after car targeted by thieves

A man from Merseyside was "stranded" in Leeds until 5am and "thousands of pounds" out of pocket after his car was targeted by thieves.

Connor Kipling, 26, a car enthusiast from Bromborough, said he was targeted by thieves at Leeds Festival over the weekend. Connor, who was originally going only to be take his friends to the festival, was stranded there until 5am this morning (Monday) after his breakdown cover service, the authorities, and festival staff failed to help.

Connor said his beloved Audi FY was hit by thieves while he and his friends enjoyed themselves at the festival. It was around 11pm, when the group returned to the car, expecting to go home, only to find the car wouldn't budge.

Connor told the ECHO: "I was meant to be dropping my friends off for the day and one of the lads decided he didn't want to come. It's not really my thing to be fair but it was one of the lads' birthdays so I ended up going on [the absent friend's] ticket.

"We parked up at the weekend day car park, went to the festival, then went back to the car at about 11pm at night. It was pitch black. We couldn't find the car for hours. By the time we went to drive off the car wouldn't move.

"I could just hear the sound of the hubs spinning. So I got out and saw the car slouched on its wheels. "Someone had tried to remove them without a jack to lift it steal the wheels of the car. They'd taken all the bolts out.

"I'm into my cars a lot, I'm quite passionate about my car so it's sort of like my pride and joy."

Major plan to tackle Liverpool's 'party flats' problem

A major plan is being put forward to tackle issues around so-called 'party flats' being rented out in Liverpool.

Accommodation sharing websites like Airbnb are used widely around the city and can provide increased choice for visitors looking for a short stay. But in certain parts of Liverpool there are issues being created.

So-called 'party lets' see property owners renting out flats for those looking to come to the city for big nights out. Councillors in affected areas say there is an issue with a lack of clear legislation at present to control and regulate what takes place with these rentals.

Councillors representing the city centre, Anfield and Greenbank - where party-lets have become an increasing problem - have now put forward a motion to raise awareness of this issue and suggest new powers for the council when it comes to the management of the situation going forward.
