Amazing drone footage shows derelict hospital on abandoned street near Edinburgh

Amazing drone footage shows a former hospital lying derelict on an abandoned street near Edinburgh.

The Roslynlee Hospital and adjacent street in Roslin were caught on camera and shared on YouTube by Gary, from Simply Scotland Photography yesterday. The former mental health facility in Midlothian, closed in 2011.

The newly obtained birds-eye footage shows the building looking very run-down. Homes on the nearby Firth Road were also captured with their roofs caved in. The hospital buildings have their windows boarded up but their overall structure appears to be relatively sound from the video, reports Edinburgh Live.

However the buildings on Firth Street look to be in a serious state of disrepair as fragments are strewn across what was the former road as well as the cottage back gardens.

Overgrown vegetation and rust looks to have taken over a number of the former small buildings on the street.

Metal fences have also been erected around structures to stop people from entering the structurally unsound buildings that litter the old road.

According to Wikipedia, Roslynlee Hospital was a grade C listed building that was designed by William Lambie Moffat and opened as the Midlothian Peebles Asylum in 1874.

An additional two wings were designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson with their construction completed in 1898.

It is understood that the healthcare complex was adopted into the National Health Service as Rosslynlee Mental Hospital in 1948 before it became the Rosslynlee Hospital in 1960.

However from the 1980s the hospital gradually declined before it was closed in 2011.

The hospital and its surrounding area is currently earmarked for redevelopment by the Robertson Group who are looking to turn the area into 121 luxury four, five and six bedroom homes - creating the village of St Margarets.

On this, the Robertson Group, said: “St. Margarets is a luxury new development coming soon to Midlothian, close to the village of Roslin and just seven miles south of Edinburgh city centre.

“Part of the wider masterplan for the former Rosslynlee Hospital and a new stand-alone village, St. Margarets will feature 121 new four, five and six bedroom detached homes.

“Set within a parkland environment of mature woodland with breath-taking views, the development is in an idyllic location, offering the best of both worlds in a rural setting and close to the city.”
