Amateur photography competition aims to 'light up' Granite City

TWO Aberdeen organisations are encouraging people to “find joy in the Granite City” through an amateur photography competition starting this month.

Aberdeen Arts Centre (AAC) has teamed up with North East Scotland College (NESCol) on the project “Light In The Dark”.

With submissions open until February 2, six winners will have the chance for their work to be exhibited at AAC.

“Even during the darkest times of the year, there is beauty to be found if we look for it,” said Steve Smith.

The NESCol photography lecturer will judge the entries in under and over 18 categories, choosing an outstanding three from each.

“This is a chance for everyone whether taking photos with a camera or a phone, to explore their creativity,” added Smith.

AAC is an independent arts venue and registered charity in the heart of Aberdeen.

The competition forms part of the organisation’s creative learning programme, providing participation opportunities for the local community across several artistic disciplines.

Creative director Amy Liptrott said: “We are deeply committed to making art accessible through our learning and development programmes.

“We are delighted to partner with NESCol for this competition to inspire a sense of community and creativity.”

AAC encompasses a 350-seater auditorium, café bar, the Children’s Theatre and flexible performances, as well as space for events, exhibitions and meetings.

Smith said: “Art and photography belong to all of us.

“I’m excited that we are working with Aberdeen Arts Centre to see how people of all ages and backgrounds interpret this theme.”

Photographers should email their entries to info@aberdeenartscentre.com by 11.59pm on Sunday, February 2, 2025.
