One of the Duchess of Cambridge's favourite fashion designers was today mugged by axe-wielding moped thugs in Chelsea.

Amanda Wakeley, 57, who is best known for her stunning evening dresses, suffered the "terrifying" ordeal this morning, her team confirmed.

"Amanda is fine but obviously this has been a terrifying experience for her," a spokeswoman said, adding the Met Police has launched an investigation.

The Met said a woman in her 50s was robbed of her watch in Ashburnham Road at about 9.30am on Wednesday after being threatened by two men, one of whom was armed with an axe.

The designer's husband Hugh Morrison reportedly posted a picture of the assailants on social media.

According to Mail Online, Mr Morrison wrote that his wife was mugged as she was getting into her car after being threatened with an axe.

A post under the social media handle @hmclm read: "Urgent, @amandawakeley was mugged this morning for her watch as she was getting into her car.

"The moped assailants had earlier let down her tyres to make her stop to investigate and came up behind her, threatening her with an axe. She is unhurt but naturally shocked.

"The police have been amazing but say that this happens 5-6 times every day in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and have asked us to share this.

"There are a lot of witnesses and the police feel that the culprits will be caught.

"In the meantime, Amanda just wants to share her experience and hopes that everyone stays safe."

In a statement, the Met said: "Officers were called at approximately 9.30am on Wednesday, November 13 to reports of a robbery in Ashburnham Road, SW10.

"The victim, a woman believed aged in her 50s, was threatened by two males on a moped. One was armed with an axe.

"Her watch was stolen during the incident. No reports of any injuries. No arrests; enquiries into the circumstances continue."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting CAD1848 of November 13, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
