Amanda Staveley admits Newcastle owners 'humbled' by Wembley support as she issues trophy pledge

Amanda Staveley has revealed Newcastle United's owners were 'humbled' by the scale of the support from the Toon Army despite the defeat in the Carabao Cup final. The Magpies' painful wait for silverware goes on as Casemiro's opener and a Sven Botman own goal condemned them to defeat at Wembley on Sunday.

It had been 24 years since Newcastle last travelled to the capital for a domestic cup final, and thousands of supporters descended upon the capital for the occasion. Trafalgar Square was a sea of black-and-white on Saturday evening, with chants from the Gallowgate End transported to the capital.

Staveley was in attendance at Wembley alongside her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi, co-owner Jamie Reuben and club chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan as the team slipped to a two-goal defeat. The financier consoled the Newcastle squad and coaching staff following the full-time whistle, before confidently asserting the club will eventually go on to lift all three major domestic trophies as well as the Champions League.

She told talkSPORT: "I was just so proud of all of the fans, everybody, and I was crying and my son was crying, we were all crying. What was amazing at two-nil down, flags going, there was a passion in everybody. Everybody has taken us on this journey.

"We will win the Carabao Cup, we will win the FA Cup, we will the Champions League and we will win the Premier League. This is all about the amazing fans that have taken us on this journey, and we're just honoured and humbled and feel very privileged to help run Newcastle United."

Newcastle fans waved their flags in unison in the closing minutes despite the impending defeat, and applauded Eddie Howe's side for their efforts following the match. While admitting she knew the fan response to the whole weekend would be 'amazing', Staveley was still left stunned by the backing the team received.

She added: "Staggered, really staggered. I was just in awe, I knew it would be amazing. I'm sorry, I really feel bad because I so wanted a win because I wanted them to have some silverware.

"It was important but we'll get there, but the lads played really well. It was a tough game, it was tough luck, and I'm proud of all of the fans and hugely proud of everybody today."

Newcastle must now refocus and shake off the defeat as they bid to get their unlikely top-four bid back on track, beginning with a daunting trip to defending champions Manchester City on Saturday. The Magpies' fortunes have already been transformed less than 18 months' on from the long-awaited takeover, and Staveley was asked on the 'faith' the fans have placed in the owners.

She answered: "We don't really deserve the support we have I always feel. As owners, we're very humbled by what's happened today. I know Yasir has been here with me, we're just so excited that we got to come.

"The scenes in Trafalgar Square last night, everything. You know what? Next time, we will get there."
