Amanda Serrano has challenged Katie Taylor to accept her proposal to fight over 12 three-minute rounds when the pair meet at Madison Square Garden in April.
Taylor will put her undisputed lightweight title on the line against Puerto Rican fighter Serrano on April 30 in what’s been billed as the biggest fight in women’s history.
She jokingly denied at the weekend that her friend Conor McGregor has asked her to 'chin' Serrano's manager Jake Paul, who has used the event to challenge the Crumlin mixed martial artist to a boxing match.
The Pride of Bray has an unbeaten 20-0 record and all of those wins have come in bouts with two-minute rounds, unlike the three minutes standard in men’s boxing.
Both boxers have trained their entire careers for two-minute rounds but Serrano has called for the two pound-for-pound best in the game to make a move for equality.
Serrano said: "We want to make a stand, we want equality. It was no disrespect to Katie but I think we have the platform right now, we have the eyes..
"If we want equality why not start somewhere? I want honestly to be equal at 12 rounds and three minutes.
"We're capable of doing it and I just think, I wanted us to be the first, but now if anyone else does it they're going to say they got it from my idea.
“I'm not sure [why Taylor doesn't want to do it]. I think it would have put the icing on the cake if we would have done it like that and showed that we're capable of doing it."
Asked her view earlier at the official press conference in London, Taylor sidestepped the question of whether three-minute rounds would enhance the contest.
Taylor and Serrano are each set to net more than a million dollars from the purse alone, with extra earnings from the pay-per-view set to top that up considerably.
And 35-year-old Taylor, who has been seeking a fight with Serrano for four years, feels the fight is a history-making event already.
She said: “I don't really feel like that will make a huge change. The fight is already iconic the way it is.
“The fact the pre-sales are the second best in history says it all really. This fight is even more historic than we realise.
“This fight is going to show the best female pound for pound fighter in the world. We're already making a stand by taking this fight.”
