Amanda Redman says suffering from burns inspired acid attack story in Good Karma Hospital

Amanda Redman has bravely opened up about her burns story.

The 62-year-old, has shared how suffering horrific burns as a child inspired an acid attack story in a TV drama.

In Good Karma Hospital, the assault on a nurse leaves Amanda’s character, Dr Lydia, reeling.

As a child, Amanda, 62, was severely injured in an accident with a pot of hot soup and spent time in a burns unit.

Opening up about her time spent in hospital as a child, Amanda revealed that those memories have never left her.

The star honoured her parents as she insisted that they were always positive, even on the worst days after her accident.

She said: "My earliest memories are of being in hospital and my parents coming to visit.

"They were always jolly and positive, although my mum has told me since that she thought her world was going to end.

Despite the fact that Amanda was a very young child when the accident occurred, her parents reassured her that she was incredibly 'special' as nobody else had burns like hers - making her beyond unique.

"But my parents always just said, ‘The fact that no one else has a burn as bad as that, that makes you special’."

After her horrendous experience and her time spent in hospital, Amanda made a return years later and it was here where inspiration sprung.

She helped research the Good Karma story by visiting the hospital where she was treated.

She said: "I just thought it would be a good idea to explore on an acid attack.

"They’re prevalent on the Indian sub-continent and they also happen here."

Defiant Amanda has never let her accident hold her back in life, and has bravely shown off her scars with no qualms.

Referring to her own scars, she said: "I don’t wear sleeves so it’s obvious I have been burned."

On the Series Linked podcast, she said she wanted the TV storyline to show how acid attacks were a “cowardly act of violence against women".

Good Karma Hospital, ITV, Sunday, 8pm.
