Amanda Holden praised by Good Morning Britain viewers as she calls out Priti Patel

Amanda Holden has been praised by Good Morning Britain viewers as she blasted Priti Patel over the "appalling" situation in Ukraine.

The Britain's Got Talent judge was interviewed on Tuesday's edition of the ITV news programme by Martin Lewis and Susanna Reid. She spoke about her recent visit to Medyka on the Ukrainian/Polish border.

Amanda travelled to the refugee camp in the wake of the Russian invasion as she recorded a new podcast called Ukraine's Hidden Voices. The 51-year-old became involved in the project after she was contacted by a mother in Kyiv sheltering from the bombs.

Amanda was relieved to confirm the mum had now safely made her way to Romania. She praised the volunteers helping the refugees at the camp before aiming a swipe at the UK's Homes For Ukraine scheme.

She said: "But 35 pages of paperwork of which the first five questions are asking the refugees what their financial situation is, what their mortgage situation is, when they literally have a bag on their laps with all their possessions in.

"It is utterly ridiculous. Priti Patel's winning, we're not going to be getting many people coming into our country, despite the fact 150,000 people have volunteered to open up their homes."

She added: "My team and I are British and we were having a look and you'd have a job to fill out these forms. It is an absolutely appalling situation. But she doesn't want immigrants, does she, Priti? I'm not political but it made me really cross."

Amanda was praised by the anchor's for making the trip to the refugee camp.

Susanna said: "What you have done and raising your voice about those injustices is really important."

Viewers following the show on Twitter echoed the praise.

Jo said: "Well done @AmandaHolden for calling out @pritipatel It's time more people seen right through the lie."

Dougie added: "100% agree with what she was saying about @pritipatel Good interview I thought."

Kathryn commented: "How brave!!"

Julie tweeted : "Well done @AmandaHolden As a nation we have big hearts unfortunately our government does not."

Martin Lewis read out a response from a government spokesperson at the end of the segment which defended the Homes For Ukraine scheme.

They said: "We are moving as quickly as possible to ensure that those fleeing horrific persecution in Ukraine can find safety in the UK and our Homes for Ukraine scheme now allows those without family connections to come here."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV Hub
