Manchester United's Alvaro Fernandez could be the next academy product to break through to the first team.

Fernandez, 18, joined United in the summer of 2020 from Real Madrid's academy on a four-year contract.

Fernandez was viewed by coaches as an exciting prospect for the future upon his arrival and he's now delivering on that promise at the club. The youngster has made 23 appearances this season and he's become a key player in the Reds' academy.

The Spaniard predominantly players at left-back and he's trained with United's first team on numerous occasions this term.

United gave Fernandez documentaries on the club and Manchester to ease his integration into life at United and it seems to have worked.

The full-back is going from strength to strength and will be targeting a breakthrough to the first team in the near future.

United U23 boss Neil Wood praised Fernandez after United's 3-1 win over West Ham in the Premier League 2 at the weekend and he discussed which players in the academy could potentially be next to make the breakthrough to the first team.

“We're always looking at performances," Wood told the Manchester Evening News .

"Normally around this time of year, we're looking for the lads to kick on, looking for the next challenge.

"At this point last season, we had Hannibal that was performing really well and who was ready for the next stage and he started training with the first team. Shola [Shoretire] at the same time was really starting to stand out.

"We've got a couple that are doing it now, Hannibal has gone up to the first team, Alvaro Fernandez has been fantastic the last two or three games. He's had a steady season, but especially the last couple of games."
