Alun Wyn Jones signs for Toulon as European giants announce World Cup signing

Former Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones has signed for European giants Toulon as a World Cup joker.

Test rugby's most-capped player announced his retirement from international rugby earlier this summer, ending any hopes of reaching a fifth World Cup with Wales later this year.

As well as calling time on his career with Wales, for whom he pulled on the red jersey 158 times, this summer also saw him finish up with the Ospreys after 17 years.

The 37-year-old has spent his entire career in Swansea, but has now decided to head elsewhere and will link up with Toulon over the coming days.

He has initially signed a short-term Toulon deal to cover squad absences as the domestic Top 14 season starts in mid-August before resuming after the World Cup in the final week of October.

When players are signed to cover injuries in France, it is known as a medical joker.

The club also say Jones will move to France with his family, which has recently grown from four to five with the addition of a third daughter.

Jones had attracted interest from clubs in England, with the likes of Gloucester, Bath and Bristol Bears all understood to have been considering a move, although the latter later ruled themselves out of contention to sign Jones.

Instead, he will head to the south of France ahead of next season, joining Wales and Lions team-mate Dan Biggar at the Challenge Cup-winning outfit.

"We are delighted and honoured to welcome a legendary player like Alun Wyn Jones to Toulon," said Toulon's director of rugby Pierre Mignoni. "His career demonstrates the immense talent of this player. His experience, his mental and physical strength as well as his exemplarity will bring to the locker room and to his teammates."
