Alton Towers to close iconic Nemesis rollercoaster from November - but it will be back

Alton Towers has warned thrill-seekers to make the most of its iconic Nemesis rollercoaster, as the resort is set to close the ride from November 6.

With a 104ft-high drop and speeds of 50mph, it's long been one of the most popular rides at the theme park, not to mention it's also the first inverted ride in Europe.

Themed around an alien with tentacles, it’s an out-of-this-world thrill with weightlessness, plunges, twists and turns that swoop by rocks and weave through the gore-spattered beast.

Posters appeared in Alton Towers announcing its imminent closure 'by order of the Phalanx', the organisation that controls the 'alien' Nemesis.

However, there is a silver lining for the rollercoaster-obsessed; the ride isn't closing forever. Instead, it's going to be getting a serious revamp, with plans to reopen in 2024 (although Alton Towers hasn't confirmed an exact date).

Kate McBirnie, Head of Product Excellence at Alton Towers Resort, said: “Nemesis is Europe’s first ever inverted rollercoaster, which has been exciting thrillseekers since 1994.

“The legendary rollercoaster is loved by thrillseekers across the UK and beyond, and we want to give fans of the ride the opportunity to experience Nemesis in its current form before it closes on November 6.”

Nemesis cost £10m when it first opened in 1994. It features turns with four inversions, and riders can experience 3.5 G-force as they strap in for the ride.

Earlier this year, Alton Towers was named the UK's best value theme park in new rankings which were determined based on numbers of rides, cost of entry, parking fees, TripAdvisor ratings and its Insta-worthy credentials. Average costs were based on two adults and two children visiting the park in peak summer periods, and included parking costs.
