Alton Towers has a knack for reinvention.
Terrifying Hallowe'en nights, a hotel dedicated to a Caribbean-themed waterpark, a land just for fans of CBeebies and luxury woodland lodges.
The theme park has become a destination and diversified across its historic 910 acres of land.
Now, they are doing it again with their minimalist stargazing pods, looking to reconnect families with the great outdoors and lower the budget of a resort getaway.
102 pods sit on a landscaped green surrounded by nearly 900 newly planted trees of field maple, silver birch and English oak to name a few of the 16 varieties, kids will love the space to run about.

Thrill-seekers can have a fun-filled day taking on the dizzying speed of Nemesis and facing the terror of The Wickerman before unwinding under a blanket of stars and planets.
The unique position by the Peak District of the sustainably sourced wooden pods, gives a clear view of the galaxies far, far away, once the moon has settled in for the eveing.

But be warned, this is almost as basic as camping.
The cosy pods have just what you need, a bed and a plug to charge your phone.

For many this is more than enough after a day adventuring and with the focus very much on the outdoors, you can easily settle in for a night under the cover of darkness, staring up at Orion's Belt and picking out Jupiter on the horizon with the kids.

But others may miss their creature comforts of a hot cup a tea and toasted marshmallows as they gaze up at a starry sky.
There are of course the on-site restaurants for the glampers to take advantage of, and all guests can join in the evening entertainment across the resort.
And after a day in the park, you may just be happy to feel a soft, fluffy pillow in your warm, Irish-built pod.

We were treated to talk from astronomer and Stargazing LIVE co-host, Mark Thompson who told us about his passion for looking to the stars and how little ones can get away with staying up late in the hopes of seeing a shooting star.
Then Sir Algernon himself [the fictional owner of Alton Towers] told us the story of how he became fascinated with the night sky, accompanied by a spectacular firework display.

The homely on-site tipi served cold drinks and alcohol into the evening, and with the soft lighting, blankets and luminous bodies adorning the sky, there was a lovely harmonious, idyllic feeling in the air.
We were warm and snug in our little pod, meaning we were well-rested and up bright and early for early entry to the rides and rollercoasters.
While we did miss a TV and a kettle, for the price of a short resort stay and park tickets, this is more than competitive.

The pods have really brought the price down for a family of four and in the beautiful surrounding and all the added extras, it is worth it.
A hot takeaway breakfast, early access to the ride, a free round of golf and evening entertainment are all included.

Take some board games and snacks for the evening and you have an affordable trip for the whole family.

Theme park trips can be expensive, so look out for deals and groupons, and think about how many times you are likely to go in a year, it may be worth getting a season pass. Or a Merlin Entertainments pass.
