Alton Towers fans given shock six week notice of Nemesis ride closure

Thrill-seekers have been told they have just over six weeks left to ride one of Alton Towers' most popular rides. The theme park in Staffordshire has said Nemesis will be closing on Sunday, November 6.

However, Nemesis will be back to delight fans in 2024, Stoke-on-Trent Live reports. A planning application for maintenance to the ride, which opened in 1994, had been submitted earlier in 2022.

In a social media post on Wednesday (September 21), the Staffordshire resort said: "By order of the Phalanx, Nemesis is closing. You have until November 6 to ride. Please make your way to Alton Towers Resort in an orderly fashion."

This year's planning application included the replacement of large sections of the track as the ride prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Kate McBirnie, head of product excellence at Alton Towers Resort, said: "Nemesis is Europe’s first ever inverted rollercoaster, which has been exciting thrillseekers since 1994. The legendary rollercoaster is loved by thrillseekers across the UK and beyond, and we want to give fans of the ride the opportunity to experience Nemesis in its current form before it closes on November 6."

There was shock on social media about the closure, but also relief that it is only for a refurbishment ahead of the 30th anniversary of the ride in 2024. Rhys @Rhysp_10 said: "Can't wait to see what's coming and I'm glad its life is being extended with the retrack."

Sarah at @thrashedroadfur wrote: "My favourite rollercoaster and I won’t be able to go in time." Holly King @HollyScream29 said: "I will miss Nemesis, but look forward to riding it again with its fresh new track!"

Parish @parish2705 tweeted: "What a ride, one of the originals." And Gem @ThisGemCan said: " Well I know which ride I will be going on as much as possible at Scarefest then."

Describing its ride, Alton Towers states: "Experience 3.5 G-force as you race past the rocks and rivers of the Forbidden Valley at 50mph. Inverted on the track, Nemesis carries dangling thrill-seekers around 250 tonnes of tangled steel.

"Ride one of the best rollercoasters in the UK as it corkscrews, spins and loops. Nemesis is, without doubt, one of the most heart-pounding, exciting and exhilarating rides you will ever experience. Sit back, it’s fright time."
