As flames approached an Altadena neighborhood, Evelyn McClendon was preparing to evacuate, according to her brother Zaire Calvin. Sadly, all three homes belonging to Calvin, his mother, and McClendon were destroyed in the fire.
Calvin recounted the harrowing experience of trying to evacuate his disabled mother, along with his wife and 1-year-old child, as the fire raged around them. He described the chaotic scene with winds gusting and fire engulfing the area, making their escape a challenging ordeal.
Despite Calvin's efforts to alert McClendon to evacuate, she was not found during the initial search. Tragically, remains were later discovered in her bedroom by a cousin who had come to assist in the search.
The devastation left by the fire serves as a stark reminder of the destructive power of wildfires and the importance of heeding evacuation orders during such emergencies. Our thoughts are with the families affected by this tragedy as they navigate this difficult time.
