Kimberly Winiecki, a 77-year-old long-time resident of Altadena, has been identified as a victim of the recent Eaton Fire. Her close friend, Jeannette McMahon, shared details of their last encounter before the tragic event unfolded.
According to McMahon, she last saw Winiecki on January 6, the day before the fire broke out. The two friends had dinner together, unaware that it would be their final gathering. McMahon recounted her efforts to help Winiecki evacuate when the fire started.
As the winds intensified on Tuesday evening, McMahon noticed the fire approaching and offered to pick up Winiecki. Despite her concerns, Winiecki reassured McMahon that she was calm and safe. Unfortunately, McMahon lost contact with Winiecki after that day.
McMahon later learned of Winiecki's fate from her brother, who was informed by officials about her passing. Describing Winiecki as an intelligent and expressive individual, McMahon fondly remembered their 20-year friendship filled with shared moments and gatherings.
Winiecki, a writer known for her sensitivity and wit, often captured their gatherings through photographs, despite her reluctance to be in them. McMahon expressed her sorrow at the loss of Winiecki's insightful presence and companionship.
For two decades, the two friends met regularly, enjoying each other's company at various social events. Winiecki's absence will be deeply felt by those who knew her, as she leaves behind a legacy of creativity and warmth.
