'Almost unresponsive' patient spat at paramedic at Lanarkshire hospital

A hospital patient spat at a paramedic after being rushed to accident and emergency.

Chloe Boyd was "almost unresponsive" when medics arrived at her Airdrie home.

Kevin Jarvis, prosecuting, told Airdrie Sheriff Court this week: "There were concerns that she might be choking or suffering a seizure.

"She was under the influence of something, but the paramedics roused her.

"She was resistant to the help being offered.

"At Monklands Hospital A&E she spat at a paramedic and it struck the side of his face.

"Tests were carried out on Boyd later when she was sober, but she did not require any medical treatment."

Boyd, 22, of Mavisbank Street, admitted assaulting the paramedic by spitting on him on February 20 last year.

Sheriff Derek O'Carroll expressed concern that this had happened "at the height of the pandemic", though it was stressed that the paramedic didn't report any COVID-19 symptoms as a result.

Defence agent Roberto Manini said Boyd, who has no previous convictions, has mental health problems.

Sentence was deferred until May 4 for background reports and bail was continued.
