Almost half of Conservative voters would support an immediate general election, poll finds

Almost half of Conservative voters would support calling a general election in 2023 that, based on current polls, would see Rishi Sunak and the Tories removed from Government, The Mirror reports. A poll from the Sunday Mirror shows 48% who said they voted Conservative in 2019 would support going to the ballot box.

It also found that four in 10 one-time Tory voters say a general election should take place as soon as possible, who join 52% of the poll's overall voters who support an election in the next six weeks. An exclusive Redfield and Wilton Strategies survey showed in February that four in 10 voters would rather see Keir Starmer in 10 Downing Street, with less than a third opting for Sunak, and only 27% in support of former prime minister Boris Johnson replacing him.

The findings are particularly concerning with other polls consistently showing the Conservatives over 20 points behind Labour. Fear is compounded by shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves currently sitting four points ahead of the Jeremy Hunt in terms of who voters would prefer to see running the economy.

Over half of those surveyed believe Sunak has failed to uphold his pledge of "integrity, professionalism and accountability" after his removal of Tory Chairman Nadhim Zahawi from office last week following his tax scandal. Concerningly that included over a third of Tories.

However six in 10 support the PM's plan to introduce minimum service levels to thwart strikes, although 47% say workers that refuse to cross picket line to keep services running should not be sacked. Only 29% believe they should.

In terms of the NHS, four in 10 oppose tax rises to fund it, while over three in five would be against those who can afford it paying £9.35 to see a GP - the cost of a prescription.
