Almost 180,000 drivers were hit with fines for speeding last year, new figures show.

Data released by the Department of Justice show 178,620 motorists were issued fixed charge notices for speeding in 2021.

It's a 1.5% decrease from 2020 when 181,263 drivers were hit with fines for speeding.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee said: "Under the Garda Síochána Act 2005, the Garda Commissioner is responsible for the administration and management of An Garda Síochána, including the recording of traffic offences, collisions and seizures of vehicles.

"As Minister for Justice, I have no direct role in these matters."

Speeding is an offence under the Road Traffic Act 2002 and is punishable by an €80 fine along with three penalty points or five penalty points on conviction.

If a driver has been caught speeding on police traffic camera, they will get notice of a fine and penalty points of the offence by post. The motorist has 28 days in which to pay the fine from the date the notice is issued.

If they do not pay the fine, it then increases to €120 which must be paid within 28 days.

If after this time the fine is still not paid, the offence is referred to the courts. If the driver is convicted in court of speeding offences and non-payment of fines, they will automatically receive 5 penalty points and a fine up to a maximum of €1,000.
