Alma Johnson Powell, Wife Of Colin Powell, Dies At 86

Alam Johnson Powell is with Colin Powell

Alma Johnson Powell, the wife of the late Secretary of State Colin Powell, passed away at the age of 86. The news was confirmed by Peggy Cifrino, the former diplomat's chief of staff and family spokesperson.

Alma and Colin Powell shared a marriage that spanned nearly six decades. Alma played a significant role in supporting her husband throughout his distinguished military career. Their love story began with a blind date in 1961, just before Colin was deployed to Vietnam as a military adviser. Over the years, Colin rose through the ranks to become the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Ronald Reagan and later served as the secretary of state during George W. Bush's administration.

Reflecting on her life as a military wife, Alma Powell once shared, 'Part of who I am is because of my career as a military wife. I think of the military as family.' She highlighted the challenges of being a military spouse, especially during times when Colin was away on duty, leaving her to navigate the responsibilities of a newlywed and, at times, a single parent.

At the time of her passing, Alma held the title of chair emeritus at America's Promise Alliance, a nonprofit organization founded by her husband. The organization focuses on supporting at-risk youths by coordinating efforts across various sectors, including community organizations, businesses, and government entities.

Alma Powell was actively involved in various philanthropic endeavors. She served on the board of trustees at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and was a member of President Barack Obama's Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities from 2010 to 2012. Additionally, she provided guidance to the Red Cross of the military district of Washington during Colin's tenure as chairman of the Joint Chiefs.

Alma Powell is survived by her three children, Michael, Linda, and Annemarie, along with their families, as well as her niece, two nephews, and numerous other cherished family members and friends. Her legacy of service and dedication to various causes will be remembered by many.
