Ally McCoist urges Rangers to deal in Steven Davis for another year as Ibrox hero hails 'excellent footballer'

Ally McCoist urges Rangers to deal in Steven Davis for another year as Ibrox hero hails 'excellent footballer'

ALLY MCCOIST has urged Rangers to deal in Steven Davis with the Northern Ireland international out of contract this summer.

The 37-year-old record appearance holder started in the 2-0 win over Hearts in the Scottish Cup final and his passing and composure helped Rangers get a firm grip on the game after half-time.

Davis had come close to a dramatic late winner against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final on Wednesday before the Germans won on penalties.

And McCoist reckons he is still a key member of the Rangers squad.

"I would keep him for another year, for sure," McCoist explained to Premier Sports.

"It's not about age, it's about whether you can make a contribution, and he certainly can.

"His fitness levels look great and he is still an excellent footballer."

On his own future, Davis said after Saturday's cup final: “To be honest, I really don’t know. We just said we would speak afterwards.

“It’s been such an emotional week, obviously with the European final. This doesn’t make up for it because it was a real, good opportunity for us, but we are delighted to win this.

“And obviously it was Jimmy Bell’s funeral on Friday, so it has been a really emotional week.

“I’m delighted we could finish on a high and we will sit down I’m sure over the next week and see where everything sits.”
