Ally McCoist touched by Celtic gesture as Rangers icon reveals he has cherished signed Hoops shirt

Ally McCoist has revisited how Celtic made a heartfelt gesture towards him as the Rangers hero hung up his boots.

The Ibrox icon spent 15 years of his playing career in Govan but it was in Kilmarnock that he ended his lethal days as a striker at. A match in 2001 with Celtic at Rugby Park brought the curtain down for the 60-year-old and speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist says the Hoops offered him a signed jersey as he was replaced on the day by someone who would go on to be a Rangers great himself, Kris Boyd.

Explaining the move, the Govan legend said: "My final game was for Kilmarnock against Celtic, and the goalscorer was Alan Mahood, am I right? We beat Celtic 1-0 to qualify for Europe. The final thing was, the ironic thing, Kris Boyd came on for me as a substitute. After that game, I'll tell you another thing, the Celtic players must have been gutted about the result although they also qualified for Europe.

"I can't remember if they won the league that year. Anyway, one of the boys came in and presented me with a Celtic jersey that all the players had signed."

When asked if he still had the signed shirt, McCoist replied: "I've still got it, absolutely.

"What, did you think I gave it to next door? It was a very nice touch. I'm completely serious, respect. It was very kind of them to think of that."
