Ally McCoist takes Celtic bait from Chris Sutton as Rangers hero hit meltdown over 'irrelevant' derby jibe

Rangers hero Ally McCoist was left speechless by Celtic fan favourite Chris Sutton - as the former Parkhead striker claimed the final derby of the campaign 'doesn't matter.'

Ange Postecoglou's side will travel across Glasgow having already sealed their second consecutive Scottish Premiership title, while the Australian is on course for a treble having already lifted the Viaplay Cup and booked Celtic's place in the Scottish Cup final. He boasts an unbeaten record over Rangers this term, while in contrast Michael Beale will finish the season without a trophy and is searching for his first derby win.

Speaking on BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra McCoist was ramping up the chat about the game - insisting that it could be a much-needed boost for Rangers and Beale going into next season. However, Sutton wasn't having any of it. He said: "As far as I'm concerned with the game it doesn't matter, does it? It is a bit of pride or whatever, and if Rangers win we will probably see their players tweeting that Glasgow is blue but...."

However, McCoist quickly cut the Celtic hero off: "Hold on a minute, did I just hear Sutton say that an Old Firm game doesn't matter? Did I hear that right?"

Sutton clarified: "It doesn't matter. Look at you getting excited about a dead rubber because your team hasn't won a game all season. Celtic may be motivated, they may not be. For Rangers it has been an embarrassing season, and there has been a lot of talk. If Rangers win we will probably hear a talk that Glasgow is blue..."

McCoist interrupted again: 'There speaketh a big English centre-forward. And Old Firm game that doesn't matter? Have you lost your marbles?"

Host Darrel Currie chimed in: "Chris do you want to retract that statement? It was a big statement."

Sutton went on: "No. Listen, I know you two are not the sharpest two tools in the shed, but Celtic are on for a Treble...ok..."

Asked if Ange wants to lose to Rangers by Currie, McCoist jumped in over an undeterred Sutton: "We are as well cancelling the game. We will go to the end of the season and not play it."

Sutton rounded off: 'You know what, we may as well do. Irrelevant."
