Ally McCoist insists the reason Rangers are struggling isn’t “rocket science.”
Gio van Bronckhorst is under huge pressure after losing 2-1 to St Johnstone at the weekend, falling seven points behind leaders Celtic. The Hoops almost came unstuck themselves the day before. Dundee United levelled through Dylan Levitt with just minutes remaining at Parkhead and looked like they would give Rangera a boost before their trip to Perth.
But Kyogo Furuhashi popped up even later to head them back into the lead. Just to make sure, Liel Abada chipped in a fourth deep into stoppage time to pile the pressure on their city rivals ahead of their Sunday lunchtime kick-off. It eas pressure they couldn’t handle as James brown and Nicky Clark goals preserved the gap Ange Postecoglou’s side had opened up the previous afternoon. Seven points already looks insurmountable and any more slips ups, especially against heats at home on Wednesday, will almost certainly seal van Bronckhorst’s fate.
McCoist has reiterated what he feels has been the major problem this season; namely, not replacing the quality lost in the summer. He also praised Celtic for having the fortitude to dig themselves out of a hole as they threaten to pull even further away at the Premiership summit.
“I’ve said for a while now and I don’t think it’s rocket science," he told TalkSport. "We’ve lost players that were capable of getting a team to a Europa League final and we’ve not replaced them with anything like the same quality or the same physicality.
“We lost Bassey for great money - £22million - to Ajax. Aribo’s away to Southampton, Patterson away to Everton These were definitely excellent players but also had a physicality about them. It’s quite simple; they’ve not been replaced to the standard of football has been nothing like as good as it was last season.
“But the problem Rangers have got now is that they;re seven points behind Celtic. In typical Celtic fashion - and that’s a compliment - lost a goal to make it 2-2 round about the 89th minute and still found time to score two goals because they’ve got something about them. There’s a general concern and a real worry from the fans that the gap is going to get bigger, rather than smaller.”
