Ally McCoist sends message to Leeds United-linked Cody Gakpo before World Cup goal

Leeds United summer transfer target Cody Gakpo was sent a message by former Scottish international and ITV Sport commentator Ally McCoist before going on to score in Monday's match between the Netherlands and Senegal.

It took until the 84th minute for the Dutch to break the deadlock but it was Gakpo who found the goal they needed after Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy's poor decision to come out to punch the ball away.

A simple flick from Gakpo was enough to send the ball past Mendy and into the net before Davy Klaassen found their second in the 98th minute to secure all three points.

The goal added onto the 23-year-old's tally of 30 goal involvements already this season in 24 appearances in all competitions for PSV Eindhoven who nearly sold him to the Whites late on in the summer.

Speaking on ITV's broadcast of the match between Senegal vs Netherlands, McCoist said he wasn't convinced before the Dutchman scored but was quickly made to swallow his words when Gakpo found the back of the net.

"Well, I’m not convinced I’m sorry to say if you want to give him the big build-up. I think there’s a player in there. But I’ve seen him a few times.

"Obviously, I saw him in the Champions League qualifiers, so I’ve seen him maybe four or five times and I know there’s a player there but I’m just not 100% convinced."
