Ally McCoist reacts to Jason Cundy's talkSPORT rant with 'miles behind' Celtic and Rangers verdict

Ally McCoist admits Celtic and Rangers are 'miles behind' Europe's top clubs as he branded Scotland's efforts this term as a 'big disappointment'.

The Hoops crashed out of European competition last night with any hopes of reaching the Europa League knockout stages dashed after a home draw with Shakhtar Donetsk. Ange Postecoglou and his side were already eliminated from Champions League qualification but last night's 1-1 draw ensured they would have no European football after Christmas. Jason Cundy launched an astonishing rant off the back of the Euro misery claiming Celtic are a 'fourth tier' side after their poor campaign.

Rangers have also struggled since that excellent result over PSV in the Netherlands to reach the tournament proper with four defeats from four and a trip to high-flyers Napoli tonight. McCoist found it hard to disagree with talkSPORT colleague Cundy as he pointed to Hearts and Motherwell's results as well as the Old Firm duo.

Asked about the pundit and his comments, the Rangers hero told talkSPORT: "He's right, isn't he? The annoying thing is he's right. Miles behind top level European football. Of course he's right.

"The Scottish clubs in European competition this year have been a big disappointment. I don't think there's any doubt about that.

"After last season where Rangers were fantastic in getting to a Europa League final. This season, I've got to be honest, Rangers did well getting to the Champions League group stages with a good result over in Holland.

"But, and I include Hearts and Motherwell, the results have been really poor. There are a number of reasons for it, there's absolutely no chance the Scottish clubs can compete on a consistent basis against the finances of the top teams in European football.

"But Rangers and Celtic can't have it both ways because they've got more money than the rest of the teams in Scotland, so there's got to be a balance.

"But I've been really disappointed in the level of result of Scottish teams in Europe. So I've got to agree with Jason. I think he's slightly harsh in the way he puts it over."
