Ally McCoist reacts to Jack Butland's 'howler' vs Man Utd

Rangers legend Ally McCoist says there are no excuses for Jack Butland's error against Manchester United this evening.

The goalkeeper, upon returning to his former club, appeared to punch the ball into his own net after a United corner.

It put the hosts 1-0 up, a lead which they couldn't hold onto thanks to a terrific Cyriel Dessers equaliser. Bruno Fernandes won it late on for the visitors, though.

Butland was making his first Rangers appearance of the year after suffering an internal bleed in his thigh.

He came back into the lineup this evening but made a costly error for his team: "Where do I start with that? It's just a howler," said McCoist live on TNT Sports.

"No excuse for that. That's a really poor error. Jack Butland has got to do better."

Butland is usually ever-reliable between the sticks, and despite his error, made some crucial saves this evening to keep Rangers in the game.

The 31-year-old will now turn his attention to Sunday's trip to face Dundee United at Tannadice as the Ibrox club aims to make it three league wins on the bounce.

Philippe Clement's men then turn their attention back to Europe with a home tie against Union St. Gilloise next Thursday.
