Ally McCoist insists Connor Goldson must play vs Celtic - even if not fit

Ally McCoist insists Connor Goldson must play for Rangers in their Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic if they're to stand a chance of progressing.

And he's joked that Michael Beale will need to wheel the defender out onto the Hampden pitch if need be.

The Ibrox club faces Ange Postecoglou's team at the national stadium on Sunday to battle it out for a spot in the final which takes place on June 3.

As if always the case, there is plenty on the line for Glasgow's big two.

Celtic are chasing a domestic treble, while Rangers are looking to retain their trophy.

Goldson is a doubt for the clash after missing the last few matches, including the last Old Firm at the start of the month.

Beale gave an update on the defender and he revealed that he is in contention to face their rivals after he returned to training this week.

The manager said: "Goldson, Wright, Kent, and Lowry all trained. We just need to see how they react now and assess after returning today to training."

However, McCoist believes the 30-year-old is a must for Rangersthis weekend, even if he's not fit.

Speaking on BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra, the pundit said: "He's got to be fit. I'll tell you right now, even if he's not fit, he's got to be fit!

"Michael Beale has got to wheel him out, I don't care what kind of nick he's in.

"He needs to take injections, he needs to get a suit of armour on - he has to go out and play this game.

"Whether he goes for Ben Davies or John Souttar, I'm not sure."

Celtic hero Chris Sutton then asked who he would start in his place if Beale decides not to risk Goldson against Celtic.

McCoist replied: "Probably (John) Souttar to tell you the truth but Ben Davies looks a far more controlled centre-back with Goldson alongside him.

"That's the importance and effect that Goldson has on others."
