Ally McCoist joked warring TV celebrities Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield’s bust-up is nothing compared to the “beef” he had with Neil Lennon in their infamous touchline rammy 12 years ago.
The co-hosts of ITV’s flagship daytime TV programme This Morning have been at the centre of speculation that they have had a huge rift and appeared on the show on Monday for the first time since stories first appeared last week. And Rangers and Scotland strike legend McCoist was put on the spot as co-hosts Laura Woods read out questions, asking her radio sidekick: “Who had the bigger beef – you and Neil Lennon or Holly and Phil?”
Chuckling McCoist responded, just moments before Lennon also appeared on the show,: “I didn’t see Holly and Phil yesterday but I think me and the wee man had a proper WWF stare off, didn’t wee? I mean, it was a WWF stare off. Eyeball to eyeball.
Proper stare off. And a secret between the wee man and I – we went for a bottle of beer after it. I don’t think Holly and Phillip went for a bottle of beer after it. So we win! Woods chimed in: “Also, I don’t think Holly’s going to be waiting for Phil in the car park either.”
McCoist laughed: “Do you know something, I think she is. Holly might have been in the car park waiting on Phil. And there’s a posse of her gang behind her. The Holly Young Team. Do you fancy their job? They’ve just been on the phone and I said yes on behalf of us. Two hours. That’s a better gig than (Jim) White and (Simon) Jordan!”
McCoist and Lennon clashed in the Parkhead technical area during a powderkeg Scottish Cup tie with three players sent off and the bust-up led to a government summit.
