Ally McCoist in England jibe as Kylian Mbappe makes World Cup history with 'over the line' hat trick

Cheeky Ally McCoist has hailed France's World Cup hero Kylian Mbappe - but the Scotland hero couldn't resists a cheeky swipe at England during the showpiece.

It was a blockbuster final in Qatar as Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot for Argentina, before Angel Di Maria rounded off a sweeping counter attack to get on the scoresheet to hand the South American side a 2-0 advantage going into the break. However, Mbappe led a second half fight-back for Les Bleus as with as he netted from the penalty spot before volleying in the leveller and taking the game to extra time.

Messi found the net in extra-time and looked to have secured the World Cup with a close range goal, before it was Mbappe to the rescue again as he took the game to penalties with another equaliser from the spot. Mbappe became the first player to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final since Geoff Hurst's in the 1966 final.

That stat was quickly flagged up by ITV on commentary, but McCoist couldn't resist quick reply over the incident. McCoist joked: “First person to score a hat-trick in a World Cup Final with all three over the line.”
