Ally McCoist in diplomatic Celtic support answer as Rangers legend torn over Ange's 'admirable' stance

Ally McCoist took the diplomatic route as he was quizzed over whether he would support Celtic in the Champions League.

But the Rangers legend was torn over Ange Postecoglou and Matt O'Riley asserting they would not alter their approach in challenging European champions Real Madrid. Celtic's title-winning boss has been steadfast in his stance that his in-form side, fresh from dismantling Rangers 4-0, would not be cowed in the face of European football royalty.

Anticipation is high for the first group stage clash at Celtic Park since 2017 and Postecoglou has refused to temper expectation for what's set to be a memorable night in Glasgow's east end. Speaking on his regular talkSPORT Breakfast slot, McCoist was asked if he'd be supporting his beloved Rangers' arch-rivals in their bid to upset the elite, to which he carefully replied: "I support all the Scottish teams in Europe.” But he did admit concern over the prospect of Celtic looking to approach playing Madrid in the same vein as a Premiership fixture.

He said: "I do (think they need to change). It's very admirable of big Ange and Matt O'Riley saying 'we don't change for anybody'. However, when you are playing the holders and one of the best teams in the world, if you think your own game - particularly at home - is good enough to beat them, by all means go ahead and do that."

He added: "However, surely, surely, you're going to realise and accept and understand that they are a completely different animal to anything you would play domestically."
