Ally McCoist gives Colak or Morelos Rangers vs Liverpool start verdict as he delivers Arfield case

Ally McCoist admits Giovanni van Bronckhorst faces a 'really tough' decision over whether to start Antonio Colak or Alfredo Morelos against Liverpool.

Rangers host Jurgen Klopp's men at Ibrox in part two of the Champions League Battle of Britain showdown following last week's 2-0 defeat at Anfield. Allan McGregor was the Light Blues' star of the show making a number of stunning saves to keep the Reds out.

One key decision for the return game is up top and whether Morelos is given the nod once again, like the previous two group stage games, or does Colak come in. The summer signing has hit the ground running in superb fashion and has now netted 13 goals in all competitions - including doubles in his last three Premiership outings. His form earned him a standout player in Scotland tag from former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae but McCoist admits at this very point he couldn't split the pair with the big decision over team selection looming for Van Bronckhorst.

Speaking at the launch of William Hill's new state-of-the-art shop on Gordon Street in Glasgow, he said: “Is it Morelos or Colak? It’s a really tough decision."

“They bring different things to the party. The front three were non-existent at Anfield against a team who were pressing high and they never got much of the ball.

“In the home games I think Morelos will give you more in terms of free-kicks and up the park.

“However, Colak is firing and if you get it into the box he will score. He scored a brilliant header at Tynecastle and if you put it into the box he will get on the end of things.

“If you are asking me who I would start, at this time it is a flip of the guy, I couldn’t split them.

“I would want to see them in training as I think they are both great strikers.

“Colak’s goal return is ridiculous, it’s six goals in three league games.

“If you look at Morelos over the distance, especially in Europe, that’s the decision Van Bronckhorst has to make.

“I have no doubts he will decide who to start after seeing them in training.

“They need to score a goal as I don’t know if they can keep Liverpool out for the 90 minutes so they will need a goal.”

One man who McCoist believes should have started last week's defeat at Anfield is Scott Arfield, admitting he would have went with him over Malik Tillman.

He added: "I thought Arfield was a miss on Tuesday at Anfield – I would have probably went with him ahead of Tillman.

"This isn’t with hindsight – although a lot of it is with hindsight – but looking at the team I thought it was strange not playing Arfield there.

"But he is now in a position where he has got certain decisions to make, whereas maybe last season or in previous games it has been a bit more straightforward."
